Instead of being granted skill points, you’re offered the chance to purchase new weapons and gear as your power grows. Still, it’s more a suggested rank than an imposition. Basically, you can go anywhere, except you can’t because you will get one-shot murdered by a level 90 grunt if you overreach. New Dawn was like baby’s first RPG, focusing on numbers attached to your character’s overall level and the regions you want to get into, rather than intricate skill trees and deep character builds. Ubisoft’s transition from an action-adventure developer to an RPG specialist started with Assassin’s Creed, and that shift in focus even touched Far Cry with spin-off New Dawn. The latest entry in the series is more of that again. Remember when Far Cry used to feel fresh? The first three games in the series were wildly different, but Ubisoft settled into a formula with Far Cry 3.
